Contents
- The metric relates the number of page views to the number of sessions.
- A high value can signal interest or difficulty finding the sought information.
- It's only interpreted by crossing it with the engagement rate and conversions.
Definition
Views per session measure the average number of pages viewed during a session.
Formula
Views per session = total views divided by sessions.
Worked example
A store goes from 3.2 to 5.1 views per session after a menu redesign. Conversions didn't move: visitors aren't more interested, they search longer. The redesign degraded navigation, it didn't improve engagement.
Orders of magnitude
Two to four views per session are common on a retail site, more on an editorial one. These markers only hold compared to your own history.
The most common mistakes
- Reading a rise as good news. It can reflect confused navigation.
- Tracking it on a single-page site. The metric then has no meaning.
- Using it as a client indicator. It rarely calls for a decision and clutters reports.
Where to find the metric
In GA4, the Views per session metric, in the engagement reports. To cross with average engagement time to distinguish interest from wandering.
