Key takeaways
  • Engagement rate is the share of engaged sessions: at least ten seconds, two page views, or one key event.
  • It is the exact complement of GA4's bounce rate: the two always add up to 100%.
  • The three conditions being alternatives, one is enough: the rate is therefore structurally high.

Definition

Engagement rate measures the share of sessions GA4 considers engaged, against three criteria of which only one need be met.

Formula

Engagement rate = engaged sessions divided by total sessions, multiplied by a hundred.

Worked example

A site shows a 68% engagement rate. That means that out of a hundred visits, sixty-eight lasted more than ten seconds, viewed two pages or triggered a key event. Thirty-two left immediately without doing anything.

Orders of magnitude

Rates of 55% to 75% are frequent on editorial content, lower on advertising landing pages where the visitor decides fast. The ten-second threshold can be set as high as sixty, which changes the figure completely.

The most common mistakes

  • Comparing it to Universal Analytics bounce rate. The two are not inverses of each other: the definitions differ.
  • Reading it as a measure of content quality. Ten seconds does not prove anything was read.
  • Comparing periods after changing the engagement threshold. The change makes the history incomparable.

Where to find the metric

In GA4, the Engagement rate metric, in the acquisition and engagement reports. The threshold is set in the property's data collection settings.
