- Queries between fifth and fifteenth position are where a moderate effort produces the most effect.
- Google already judges the page relevant: what's missing is usually small, not new content.
- Impression volume gives the priority order, not the position.
Definition
Quick wins are the queries near the visibility threshold, generally between positions 5 and 15, where a rank gain quickly turns into traffic.
Worked example
A page at position 11 on a query at 3,200 monthly impressions gets almost no clicks. By adding a section that covers the missing angle and three internal links from strong pages, it moves to position 6: the traffic appears, with no new page and no external link.
Orders of magnitude
Above fifth place, gaining a rank takes a lot for little. Below fifteenth, an adjustment usually isn't enough. The useful window is narrow, and that's what makes it profitable.
The most common mistakes
- Sorting by position rather than impressions. A query at position 6 with no search is worth nothing.
- Creating a new page. It will compete with the existing one: a classic case of cannibalization.
- Treating too many queries at once. Five to ten a month, done seriously, beat fifty skimmed.
Where to find the metric
In Search Console, the Performance report filtered on a position between 5 and 15, sorted by descending impressions, excluding brand queries.
