- An active page generates at least one organic click over the period.
- The ratio of active pages to published pages reveals the site's truly productive share.
- Pages with no clicks despite impressions are the first reservoir of SEO work.
Definition
Active pages count the distinct URLs that received at least one click from search results.
Formula
Active-page rate = active pages divided by indexed pages.
Worked example
A site of 420 indexed pages counts 96 active pages over three months, so 23%. Three quarters of the site generate no clicks. Looking at impressions, 140 more pages appear in results without ever being clicked: those are the priority to treat, not creating new ones.
Orders of magnitude
On many sites, 20 to 30% of pages generate almost all the traffic. A rate below 20% usually signals a quality or targeting problem rather than a lack of content.
The most common mistakes
- Creating new pages before treating the inactive ones. The fastest reservoir is in the existing.
- Not distinguishing pages with no impressions from pages with no clicks. The first are an indexing matter, the second a click-rate matter.
- Counting technical pages. Pagination, filters and service pages skew the ratio.
Where to find the metric
In Search Console, the Performance report, Pages tab, filtered on at least one click. To cross with the indexing report to know the denominator.
