- Three alternative criteria: ten seconds, two page views, or a key event. One is enough.
- The ten-second threshold can be set up to sixty, which deeply changes the figure.
- It's the numerator of the engagement rate, and the inverse of bounce in GA4.
Definition
An engaged session is a session meeting at least one of the three engagement conditions defined by GA4.
Worked example
A site raises the engagement threshold from ten to thirty seconds. Its engaged sessions drop from 6,800 to 4,100 without any visitor changing behavior. The figure is more demanding, so more informative, but the history becomes incomparable.
Orders of magnitude
The default ten-second threshold is low: reading a headline is enough. Many analysts raise it to thirty seconds to get a measurement closer to real interest.
The most common mistakes
- Changing the threshold without noting it. Year-over-year comparisons become false without anyone knowing why.
- Reading the metric as proof of reading. Ten seconds on a page proves nothing.
- Comparing to non-bounced sessions from Universal Analytics. The definitions have nothing in common.
Where to find the metric
In GA4, the Engaged sessions metric, in the engagement reports. The threshold is changed in Admin, Data streams, Session settings.
